This madness can't be Jimmered

It is sheer madness right now. Jimmer gets Gatored, an underrated and young Arizona team defeats the defending champions, Utah State continues their one-and-done trend, and Butler and VCU continue to surprise the nation. If people don’t get excited over this, then what do they get excited for?

The great thing about March Madness is that some of the population appear from behind the shadows and cheer for the winning teams. People bicker and fight about who is better than whom, even if those players have been out of the scene for a few years now. It sure is wonderful and amazing to see that fighting actually brings people together. Who would have thought that very fact is what makes the sporting world go round? It’s true. Without upsets, without rivalries, and without the fans, what would this month mean?

My dad pointed out to me during the WAC tournament something very thought-provoking. He said to me, “”Isn’t it amazing that one leather, orange ball going through a cylinder just a little bigger than the ball itself can change your emotions? One minute you are angry and mad, yelling at the ref, and the next you are screaming and cheering for your team?”” Dad, how true that is. I don’t know if that has ruined the game for me now though because I now pay attention to how I feel during the games. You go from obscene and gnashing your teeth to excitement that is incomparable. Goosebumps crawl up your arms. You high-five your buddy next to you and pump your fist. Jumping up and down shakes the seats. To think that all happened in a matter of maybe 5 to 6 seconds.

People who don’t really follow college basketball often ask me why I get so excited over the games. They ask why I let the losses bother me so bad. It is hard to explain, but to those of you who inherently feel the same emotions I do, maybe you can explain it better than I can.

So let us revel in the next few days as upsets continue to be made and fans stick around and endure the Jimmering that comes their way just to be a part of this incredible game that is college basketball.

Are you a good person? Or an idiot?

I woke up on the morning of May 8th to turn over the page and start a new chapter in my life. I woke up late and had to rush out the door with only one piece of toast in my hand. As I began the traditional walk to the Spectrum to enjoy our commencement exercises with Danny Glover, I thought it would be nice to hear what he would have to say. This was my day, a day i had worked hard to get to for the past four years, racking up thousands of dollars of debt and forgoing the warm meals of my mother. Today, I had finally earned my stripes and was going to be a graduate.

It started out as normal as any other ceremony could, then Mr. Glover got up and was met with a cheering crowd. . . with a few BOOS mixed in. I stared at those people, holding their redneck signs, shaking their white trash hands, screaming, booing, hissing at the coach of the Angels :) and could not believe what I was witnessing. These stupid, back-woods, hippies were coming into MY Spectrum, interrupting MY day, the day of my friends, one that we had been looking forward to for the last few weeks. I actually did scream at them to shut up, then this kid behind me, another graduating student, hits me in the arm to shut up because he was also booing Glover.

Really?

I bit my tongue. It was difficult but I knew i would regret what my actions might produce. I wish they could read this, but anyone who does, please know I don't care how you feel about his "political agenda" this was not that day to oppose it. How DARE you come into a place I hold dear and interrupt a beautiful day. Families were there to hear him speak, to support their children. Instead, the wailing of banshees were being shouted across the area. Never EVER do that again. That was not only idiotic, but how dense can people be? The simple minds of these ignorant hicks, trying to ruin this, was something that I hope Utah State will never have to see again. Let's face it, that just gave us a bad rep. Why would anyone want to come back when they can't even make it through a simple graduation commencement talk without getting hounded.

Go back to your outhouse.
